Training advanced AI models requires thousands of specialised processors working together for long periods of time, sometimes for weeks or months. In addition, AI systems must remain active after training so they can respond to millions of users every day. Researchers estimate that data centres already consume a noticeable percentage of global electricity, and this demand is expected to rise as AI becomes more widely used. Some studies suggest that a single large AI training process can consume as much electricity as hundreds of homes use in a year!

Why do AI data centers consume so much electricity and water?

As the demand for AI grows each day, major concerns are increasing about the usage of our fresh drinking water to cool these facilities down, as AI systems rely heavily on high-quality, potable drinking water to cool the servers down.

One of the biggest concerns is carbon emissions because many data centres still rely on electricity produced from fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas.
